Papa John Stops Blog

Oh hi, good news, it was just a flesh wound. In sadder news, my blog has slowed to a crawl. I had plans to talk about the important things like my 8 track collection when I got this news. Big Joe Turner sent me an IM over the internets and spilled the sad, sad beans about John "Mamas and the Papas" Phillips. Here's the rundown and how it affects me, because that's the most important thing...

When there was a bombshell mentioned in the Oprah commercials, I knew what was up. On the show Mackenzie explained how the unfortunate incident started the night (gulp) before her wedding. It reportedly lasted 10 years and was consensual--whatever that means in this instance. I totally believe it. Here's why. During the 80s Mackenzie was touring with the (groan) New Mamas and Papas. They usually were on the lower tier of TV entertainment, I saw them on some show and something was just off. Little did I know what it was. Also during the time, Mackenzie was in the throes of a terrible drug addiction. So was John, but this was basically his call because he was the father and the "relationship" wasn't equal, healthy or whatever.

File Under: Oh glory.... So now I'm left with this issue. Here's the odd thing, I'm glad Mackenzie put Papa John on blast like this. While unsettling (reading the news made me actually bellow) this shouldn't be a secret. The good news, Mackenzie seems to be better after revealing this, and that's good.

Odd Facts:

1. I've always thought Mackenzie was oddly attractive (in the best sense).

2. I never could stand Michelle Phillips

3. Denny Doherty is/was one of my favorite people to listen to tell a story.

4. John Phillips has always given me the heebie-jeebies.

5. I don't like the Mamas and Papas. I like a lot of group who were similar to them but not them. I do like "Creeque Alley" though.

6. I like lists.

The Jay Leno Show

The Jay Leno Show- We've been awaiting this disaster for a few months and it didn't disappoint. It was/is a disaster. Leno was the host of the Tonight Show for 17 years after being Johnny Carson's substitute host. Before that, Leno was a hilarious comedian whose best work can be seen via YouTube. Clearly the times have changed. Whether Jay was asked (axed) to leave the Tonight Show for Conan O' Brien or left on his own speed, who knows. But the truth is little consolation for a talk show that's going to be on every weeknight at 10PM Eastern.

The main problem with the Jay Leno Show is that it's pointless. Really I want to see dramas as 10PM, not talk shows and especially not train wrecks. He's a talented guy, a good talk show host but why is this on? Oh yeah that's right, ratings. For his inaugural broadcast Jay had this skit that went on forever, Jerry Seinfeld fell by and I turned away to watch Guiding Light on my computer. Sad, I know.

Who's that? Oh look, it's Kanye West. He was able to visit after his shameful display at the VMA's. We see from the pic he's shell shocked after interrupting little ol' Taylor Hicks Swift's big moment. She looked as lost as Carrie out there didn't she. Anyway, this drama provided Jay a "Hugh Grant" moment so early on. It's quite fortuitous isn't it? Jay later offered Kanye some counseling at a crazy hospital (in a room next to Ben Silverman) and Kanye decided to torture us musically with help from Rhianna and Jay-Z.

Grade: C-

What I'd Do: Cancel it and give Leno a weekly show.

Michaela Watkins and Casey Wilson Canned At SNL

SNL's having problems, now they're axing cast members way, way close to its season premiere. I guess we can add Michaela Watkins and Casey Wilson to the list. Hopefully, something can be worked out but as of now, sucks. See how I did that? It's a segue, yeah me!

Michaela Watkins- Now there's a lovely, lovely woman. I liked her right off when she appeared on SNL last season. I saw a clip of her work before she did her first show, it was hilarious. Sadly she wasn't used a lot on the show. She's probably best remembered as Hoda Kotb and the internet blogger Angie Tempura. Watkins is also known from her stint on "The New Adventures of Old Christine."

The problem with Watkins's exit is that many few it's premature and that she's actually funny. Also hearing about this in September is relatively late given SNL's track record. I have no idea why she was axed, Lorne Michaels said something about her being better suited to having her own show. Bitch pleeze...

Here's a clip from one of the only funny recurring skits from SNL...

Casey Wilson- The outcry over Casey's ouster? Not so much.
I like Casey Wilson. Her problem? She wasn't that funny on SNL. It happens. Chris Rock blew chunks during his tenure there. Michael McKean (Michael McKean!) was lousy on his season. Wilson is in good company and she'll bounce back. The other problem with Wilson seems to be the people around her who didn't tell her, "Hey, that's not working." In fact, Wilson was often the only thing in a skit that wasn't funny--and she certainly wasn't the straight woman. That made for uncomfortable watching, something that could have been alleviated with a few good talks and constructive criticism. It didn't have to go down like this.

Part 2: They should have given her another year.

Here's something, hilarious....
